Maydi is a frankincense of northern Somalia — pale, citrus-bright and low in bitterness. Because Boswellia frereana contains little to no boswellic acid, its resin is close to a pure oleo-resin: it tends to melt cleanly, burn with relatively little soot, and is valued for essential-oil distillation. It is used in perfumery, distillation and premium retail.

Buyer questions

Maydi — frequently asked

What is Maydi frankincense?

Maydi is the Somali trade name for Boswellia frereana, a frankincense that grows mainly in the highlands of northern Somalia. It is valued for its pale colour, clean citrus-pine aroma and reputation for high essential-oil yield.

How is Boswellia frereana different from Boswellia carterii?

B. frereana (Maydi) contains little to no boswellic acid and tends to give a cleaner, more citrus-forward profile, while B. carterii (Beeyo) contains boswellic acids and is often chosen where those compounds matter, such as extracts and wellness products.

What grades and sizes are available?

We sort Maydi into three indicative grades — Mushaad (A), Mujarwal (B) and siftings (C) — by tear size, colour and clarity. Exact tolerances are confirmed per lot and in the commercial agreement.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Minimum order quantities vary by grade, packaging and destination. Our export team confirms current terms on enquiry.

Can I get a sample before ordering?

Yes. We can provide representative samples from available stock, with lot information, so you can evaluate before committing.

What documentation is available?

Available shipment documentation is confirmed during quotation and depends on the product, origin, destination and buyer requirements. Lot-specific analysis and supporting documentation can be arranged as part of the commercial agreement.

Storage guidance: keep cool (below about 25 °C), dry and ventilated, away from direct light and strong odours. Shelf life and full trading specifications are confirmed per lot — see frankincense grading and documentation.
